Description

so i wanted to do my own Barnabas. While i loved the movie I wanted him to feel more elegant like Jonathan Frid (RIP!!), look like Johnny, and have a very Tim Burton weird edge still too. It's a wip and i'm gonna do more with it but i'm real happy with how this sketch came out :D

I'm old enough to remember those tapered at the waist, double-breasted Edwardian suits with those stand-up collars (Elvis, anyone?); even The Moody Blues and Procol Harum wore them! And, while his "mod" suits never had the stand-up collar, no one ever wore the double-breasted suits as well as Mr. Frid's Barnabas.

I like the incompleteness of this "WIP", however, and your use of shading and line is subtle. The 19th century artist Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres comes to mind whenever I see this contrast between light (the suit, accoutrements) and dark (the hair and face) in such a sketch. You've certainly captured a Burton quirkiness in the eyes and off-kilter smile. He looks uncertain, not sure about something he's either heard or seen--so like Barnabas, then and now--wonderful! The hair is beautifully detailed. The hand holding the cane is well done.
I realize that you will be making some changes, but I will leave that up to you to see what you will for this. As for me, I enjoy this drawing immensely, and am always glad to see pencil sketches.
